The Alliance of Haitian Rural Women (AFPA) is federation of women associations established on March 12, 2010, three months after a massive earthquake shattered Haiti. This deadly earthquake left behind tens of thousands of widows and orphans who relocated to rural areas where they had relatives. All women in Haiti face the same socio-economic problems, violence inequalities rooted in the patriarchal system that pervades the whole country. However, the dehumanizing situation to which Haitian rural women has been subjected for centuries violates all basic principles of human rights. To address these issues, this federation of rural women's associations is committed to taking all appropriate steps to enforce and create the conditions that are conducive for women farmers in Haiti to enjoy their basic human rights. With this in mind, AFPA is a non-profit, non-denominational organization grouping all women farmers, regardless of their political affiliation and sexual orientation.
We are concerned with the basic needs of rural women while attaching great importance to relations and discussions with male groups in order to restore the balance between men and women and to open a dialogue leading to complementarity. AFPA addresses all issues affecting rural Haitian women such as gender-based discrimination, violence, and the lack of access to education, land ownership, and material resources. Our alliance operates in areas as diverse as gender equality, professional equality, access to education, employment and material resources, girl trafficking, domestic violence , lesbophobia, women’s participation in public life, sexism, and liberal globalization. We are committed to promoting solidarity between urban and local women throughout Haiti and all over the world.
